Don’t try to make every moment magnificent.
Director Billy Wilder gave Mike Nichols this advice:
A movie is like a dialectic, Nichols says — a creative push and pull between two opposing points of view. The trick is to reach a satisfying synthesis.
On that score, Billy Wilder once gave him a sage piece of advice.
“He said, ’Don’t forget to leave some string for the pearls.’”
Meaning?
“Meaning, don’t make every moment magnificent. Sometimes, someone just gets up and gets in the shower.”
