Paul Karasik: “Study something you love in depth”
Spend 45 minutes tonight studying something you love.
Cartoonist and teacher Paul Karasik: “Study something you love in depth.”
“Here’s the only thing you need to remember from this talk: ‘Study something you love to death’—I mean ‘depth’! [laughter] ‘Study something you love in depth.’ I just gave you an hour, so tonight give me 45 minutes. Spend 45 minutes tonight studying something you love. Watch the first five minutes of your favorite movie 7 times. You will notice new things.”
It’s from a lecture about his book How To Read Nancy. (via

“As an artist, how do I walk through a museum?
Artists are both more patient and more impatient than a non-artist in a museum setting. I do not want to linger in front or things that don’t interest me.
I don’t care who made them, I don’t care what time period they were made in, the incredible backstory of how the piece ended up in the museum - it couldn’t interest me less.
I just want the visual hit, that adrenaline rush of some visual piece of interior feeling or knowledge or insight. Without it, I’m gone.
When I find it, I can stare at a painting for hours, long after people with sensibility have moved on.”
